Well this was not quite the Spring Break we had planned? Right? But we will all get through this! I'm not quite sure how this will all work, so we will figure it out as we go. I'd like to use this blog for now to bring things to you to help you keep on track with your education. Remember the novel, Freedom's Price, we have been reading? Well, I grabbed it when I was able to go into our classroom so that we could finish reading it! I'm looking for the best platform to read it to you so that you can comment like we do at school in book clubs.
I put some links here for you to use and some for your parents. Do you remember your school user id's and passwords? If not, email or text me! I'll send them to you. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you during these strange days! I miss you all!! Love you guys! Here is a link to the Student Login for ClassDojo Here is a copy of a Study Guide Parents can use with their kids to review for our Fall Benchmark Test on Monday morning at 8 a.m. Please ensure your children get to bed early Sunday night so they are well rested and ready to do their best! Also need them to school on time so they can begin their test on time with their classmates. I hope this format will help! Click the link below to download the study guide to your device or to print. Please review with your child. Thanks for all your help at home!
I learned how to use a kind of paint I've never used before called "chalk paint" and it is great stuff! Take a look at our new file cabinet for student data! It is going to work and look great! Always learning something new!

One last reminder for today, I have quite a few students who did not turn in their Reading
Log homework. This will be an F in the gradebook. I don't want to see that happen. They can still turn in last week's reading log if they have it, tomorrow for partial credit. We have a reading log this week as well that will be due next Tuesday. I hope students are diligent to read 45 minutes each day and complete the reading log for the day. If they don't do it all week and try to catch up the day before it is due, they will not get the full benefit of the assignment. The only way to improve our reading to to practice reading! ;-) I will reward them with grades, prizes, A.R. parties, tickets. This is a win win! :-) Also, just a reminder that students may come take A.R. quizzes between 7:15-7:30 a.m. There have been very few students taking advantage of this time. I'm going to move it to my classroom so that I can work in my room during that time since there are not many coming in. I gave my students a sheet of challenge projects from our Wagon Train Simulation that they could do for
extra credit about 4 weeks ago. So far nobody has picked one to discuss with me. (Instructions said to clear the project with teacher first) If they are going to do any extra credit, this must be completed before the end of the 8th week of this 9 weeks so that we have time to present and grade them for the next report card. I've uploaded a copy of the project page named "Wagon Train Extra Credit" on my NSE website in the "classroom notes" link. I hope we get some great presentations! Click here to download a copy of the project page I gave students. desotoisd-northsidees.ss10.sharpschool.com/school_information/school_staff/gaudry__rebecca/classroom_notes Dear Parents, Beginning Monday, I will be opening the 202 computer lab in the mornings at 7:15 -7:30 a.m. for 5th graders to come in and take Accelerated Reader (A.R.) tests on their library books AFTER they have completed reading them well. Please discuss their book with them so they can do their best on the A.R. test. We should be scoring 70-100% consistently. When they finish thier A.R. test, they will proceed to the Gym. Students who are attempting to come in and play or cause disruption, will be sent to the Gym, so that the lab is quiet for others testing. They also have time to take A.R. tests in the Library on Mondays, our class Reading Lab time on Tuesdays, or any morning between 7:40-8:00 a.m. in our classroom along with anytime they have finished their work in my class. There should be no reason for students to not be taking A.R. tests with all the access they have. A.R. is a great program because each student is reading on his/her individual reading level. Due to the customized nature of A.R. I cannot say everyone should be taking the same number of A.R. tests. Students with a lower reading level should be taking more A.R. tests because their books are shorter. Those with higher reading levels will likely take less tests in the same time period because their chapter book are longer. Generally speaking, all students should be taking at least 1 A.R. test every 1-1.5 weeks or more.
They should be reading a minimum of 45 minutes a day at least 5 days out of the week. If they can do an hour, that would be even better for them to build their stamina for sitting and reading through the length of the STAAR Test. They should also be using the same books to complete their reading logs. The reading log will be thier "ticket" to come to the lab in the mornings. Without it, they will be directed to the Gym according to normal morning procedures. I told them the first week of January, that A.R. tests will now go in the gradebook, but very few have been taking them, despite daily reminders. Reading logs go home on Monday and are due the next Monday. I do this so that if they don't feel well one day or have a busy night, they can catch up on the weekend. Last Monday, I only had 8 out of 26 reading logs turned in. I encouraged them to turn them in late Tuesday or Wednesday and still only got a couple more turned in. Due to missing grades, your student may have a hiccup in his/her grades for this 3 week progress report, but they can bring that up by not missing any more for the rest of the 9 week grading period. They also have a reading log challenge that will earn them a free Six Flags Ticket. It is due on Friday, February 24th. They can use the SAME books they are reading for thier reading logs and for A.R. tests for the Six Flags challenge. It is a bright yellow paper and came home this week already. No late logs will be possible. If students lose their reading logs, you can download and print another one from my webpage and I have a stack of them in our mail center in the room. Also, if you have books at home, you can look them up at www.arbookfind.com to see if they are in the A.R. system and what reading their reading levels. Our students need to be reading as much as possible to build fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. This has a direct impact on their success on the STAAR 5th Grade Reading test we will be taking in March. Hope you have a great weekend! - Mrs. Gaudry
By now your 5th grader should be settled into some routines for reading.
